GSI LD ARCH 112 Landscape Plants: Identification and Use

The GSI for LD ARCH 112 is expected to attend all lectures and field walks. Responsibilities include the collection and maintenance of cut specimens in the plant lab, assistance in locating field specimens for study and review, maintain a running, cumulative list of plants studied throughout the course, including plant names, dates studied, and field locations, and web-site updates.

The GSI is expected to assist in preparing and grading quizzes, exams, assignments and notebooks, maintain projection equipment, and coordinate guest speakers.

The GSI for LD ARCH 112 should have a good knowledge of plant materials in the Bay Area as well as a strong interest in horticulture and planting design. The candidate needs to be comfortable working with digital information.


GSI LD ARCH 120

The GSI for this class must have a clear understanding of the principles of grading and drainage. Experience with landscape construction will also be useful, but is not necessary. The GSI for LD ARCH_120 is expected to provide instruction and support to students during class time and to establish standard hours outside of class for student appointments. Their duty also includes assisting with the correction and red-lining of weekly class assignments, and reviewing students' final prototypes or papers. The time commitment will vary between 10 and 15 hours a week, depending on the class topic and difficulty of problems. (On average: 4 hours in class each week, 3-4 hours of appointments, 3-4 hours of red-lining) Research on technical aspects of construction, pulling slides, aiding with the preparation of grading problems and Xeroxing assignments will be required at times. The GSI is expected to meet with course instructor once a week for discussion of class objectives and student progress.


LD ARCH 121 Teaching Assistant

The appointee will be for (25%) time teaching assistant for LD ARCH 121 -- Landscape Construction, a class expected to have approximately 45 students. It is important that the appointee has good skills at producing basic design drawings, understands landscape dimensions and has familiarity with construction detailing. The TA will be responsible, under my supervision, for marking class assignments and will attend the two 1 1/2 hour lectures each week and will be responsible for setting up slide projectors for the lectures and, on some occasions, help assemble slides for the lecture. They will also be responsible for bringing samples of construction materials from the materials storage cabinet in Wurster Hall and reference texts from my office in Wheeler Hall to class. They will help collect additional samples and slide images as well as coordinate handouts and field trips. Part of the slide and handout preparation will happen in January before classes begin.

The TA will set regular office hours for 2 hours per week to be available for desk critiques. On three to five occasions during the semester, these office hours will be utilized for one of two" section" meetings to review work with students.

The position will average approximately 10 hours per week over the 5 months (Jan. - May) of the semester although some key weeks during the semester will require more time for grading while the weeks in January and May will require less than the 10 hours/week.


READER POSITION LD ARCH 171

The responsibilities include: Pulling and organizing slides from the
Architectural Visual Resources Library for lectures; copying course
materials including lecture outlines and assignments; grading of midterm, term papers and finals; running slide projectors during lectures; and maintenance of slide projectors.

Note: This reader position is administered through the American Studies program.


LD ARCH 202 GSI

The GSI will attend the 4 hour studio sessions each week (2-6pm MW).
During class time, the GSI for this class will be responsible for giving
desk crits. Additionally the GSI will have 2 hours of office time per week. He/she will be expected to organize field trips, handouts and other class materials as needed. The GSI is expected to have good design, graphic, and grading skills and the ability to work with digital information is essential.


LD ARCH 222 GSI

Duties of GSI in LD ARCH 222: Organize/update laboratory exercises, explain exercises to students and provide one-on-one help with exercises, review student exercises to identify common errors and develop revisions to improve exercises, present 2-3 lectures, develop updated materials for these and other lectures, meet with a subset of students regarding their independent study projects, review and comment on a subset of independent projects, participate in organization and running of Calif Water Symposium.


LD ARCH 253

In coordination with faculty responsible for the course, GSI will develop list of potential speakers, invite speakers, and develop schedule for lecture series. GSI will coordinate the publicity of the lectures in the form of a poster and weekly email messages to the LAEP students and the Wurster Hall community at large.

The brownbag lectures are held Wednesdays at 1pm, except during weeks when the department may schedule evening lectures. Normally, the LD ARCH 253 lecture schedule is finalized prior to the beginning of classes, therefore the task of contacting speakers, finalizing the dates must be done the month before the course begins.

LAEP PhD students advancing to candidacy are given priority for this position to provide them with an opportunity to gain teaching experience.
